"I can think of nothing more dangerous than making mentally ill and despairing disabled people believe their deaths have greater value than their lives. Well one thing, perhaps: Having a society accept the idea that it can benefit at the expense of people in desperate need of care–and whose care is very expensive."

I do not claim to know why Bottum—the former editor of First Things, a longtime ally of people on the front lines in the battle to defend marriage—wrote this astonishing essay. Judie Brown: "Blinded by truth"

Judie Brown

Judie Brown
August 31, 2013

The word justice is frequently thrown around, but not often understood. When will people come to realize that, through every act of abortion, a child is brutally murdered? Our selfish and "me" society teaches people that this act is acceptable, and certainly not one that should be spoken out against. We must right this wrong, and put our nation back on a path of respecting and valuing all life. Too many have suffered already.

Conjoined Twins Safely Separated, Almost Became Abortion Victims
Emmett and Owen Ezell were born last month in Dallas, Texas but they were very much unlike most sets of twins. They were are identical twins[1] joined in utero — a rare phenomenon that happens in as many as 1 in 200,000 births.

About half of such twins are stillborn, but Owen and Emmett survived not only the birthing process — their mother rejected abortion. http://www.lifenews.com/2013/08/30/conjoined-twins-safely-separated-almost-became-abortion-victims/
Chicago Public Schools Mandate Sex Ed Classes for Kindergarten Students
They are much, much too young to even be thinking about sex and sexual acts at their age are the worst form of pedophilia, but Chicago public schools think little boys and girls in kindergarten are ready for sex ed classes.

From a local report: Some people may think a five-year old is too young for sex education. Administrators with Chicago Public schools do not. http://www.lifenews.com/2013/08/30/chicago-public-schools-mandate-sex-ed-classes-for-kindergarten-students/
Iowa Medical Board Adopts Rules Banning Dangerous Webcam Abortions
The Iowa Board of Medicine voted 8-2 today to adopt a rule effectively ending webcam abortion in Iowa.
The webcam abortion practice started with the Planned Parenthood of the Heartland affiliate using it in Iowa, a rural state where the abortion business has a difficult time getting an abortion practitioner to each of its clinics. As a result, it set up a process by which the abortion practitioner only visits with the woman considering using the mifepristone abortion pill via a videoconference, as opposed to an in-person visit the FDA suggests. http://www.lifenews.com/2013/08/30/iowa-medical-board-adopts-rules-banning-dangerous-webcam-abortions/
Abortion Activist: You Don’t Need to be a Doctor to Rip Apart a Baby With a Vacuum
“Things are looking pretty bleak in the world of abortion care” with “[a] wave of states” having been “disturbingly successful at shutting down abortion providers by passing medically unnecessary restrictions on clinics,” abortion rights absolutist and Daily Beast contributor Amanda Marcotte lamented at the open of her August 29 Women in the World blog post.

But alas, there’s a bright ray of hope in the womb-like darkness, Marcotte found in her post tagged as a “call to arms” piece (see screen capture below page break): deep blue states like California working to liberalize abortion laws . http://www.lifenews.com/2013/08/30/abortion-activist-you-dont-need-to-be-a-doctor-to-rip-apart-a-baby-with-a-vacuum/

China: Wife Missing Who Lobbied Govt After Husband’s Forced Sterilization
ChinaAid learned on Aug. 26, 2013 that Chinese Christian Wang Xuebai had been out of contact for several days. It is believed that Wang was detained in connection with her appeals to the government on behalf of her husband.

Wang’s troubles began in 2009 when her husband, Li Defu was forced to undergo a vasectomy in the city of Shangqiu, Minquan, Henan Province. Wang appealed the court to guard her husband’s rights, but was threatened and detained. http://www.lifenews.com/2013/08/30/china-wife-missing-after-lobbying-govt-after-husbands-forced-sterilization/
Bro-Choice Men Prove Abortion is the Ultimate Exploitation of Women
Abortion advocates like to phrase the ongoing legal battles over abortion as a “war on women,” but is it really?
Most women don’t identify as pro-abortion. At least half of all American women, if not slightly more than half, are pro-life. Abortion is in no way an issue where all women walk in lockstep. And really, is it women who benefit most from abortion being free and legal on demand? Hardly. The people who have the most to gain from keeping abortion legal at all times are slimeball men. http://www.lifenews.com/2013/08/30/bro-choice-men-prove-abortion-is-the-ultimate-exploitation-of-women/

Under Obama Billions in Foreign Aid Has Gone to Groups that Support Abortion
Lawmakers in Washington are attempting to rebalance U.S. spending on foreign aid which has for years limited funding for maternal and child health and increased spending for groups promoting population reduction and abortion.
The U.S. budget for family planning and reproductive health has increased some 57% since 2006 when Democrats took control in Congress, yet funding for maternal and child health has increased just 16% overall and its funding has dropped 4% within U.S. Agency for Development (USAID). http://www.lifenews.com/2013/08/30/under-obama-billions-in-foreign-aid-has-gone-to-groups-that-support-abortion/

Spirit & Life - The Importance of Language in Changing the Culture

spiritlife

Spirit & Life is the weekly e-column of
Human Life International.
_______________________________
The Importance of Language in Changing the Culture
Dear deaconjohn,
For forty-one years Human Life International has been engaged in building a Culture of Life through education and activism. Though we have been blessed with success in many of our efforts, we have also faced numerous difficulties. One of these difficulties is one we share with all who defend life, faith and family: As cultural values in the U.S. and elsewhere have decayed, the language used to express and defend those values has become foreign to many whom we are trying to reach.

This is evident when attempting a conversation about the dignity of the human person, traditional marriage, homosexuality, contraception and life issues with anyone who disagrees with the pro-life position. The foundational principles of Natural Law and basic Judeo-Christian teaching that have guided centuries of civilizations are no longer points of demarcation for understanding the human person and his relationship towards his neighbor, or his Creator. Instead, these once-common and uniting principles are now widely rejected. Today, people are more prone to start from emotion, popular sentiment or politically correctness, rejecting the idea of objective truth.

We are no longer starting on the same page or speaking the same language. We are living in a modern Babel, and we should not be surprised that we are more divided.

Consider how our society's storytellers -- our entertainers, politicians and media -- have changed our language about divorce, contraception, cohabitation and abortion.  What was once clearly understood to be harmful and detrimental to family life, children and to society is now marketed as good.

If I want you to change your mind about a certain subject, then I will consistently feed you what I want you to hear, read, see and experience. The obvious reason for ads on television and radio, for example, is to convince the listener to buy their product. The more one hears about the product the better chance the marketer has in convincing the listener to buy the product. The marketers of the Culture of Death didn't accomplish their goals overnight. They had a strategic plan to gradually move minds and hearts to their perspective -- they sold a story to the world, convinced hundreds of millions to ignore certain basic truths, and now have people "freely" choosing to do terribly destructive things for themselves and for society.

Blessed John Paul II talked about the need for a new grammar that would serve as a starting point for dialogue and engagement about human life and human existence. His terms "Culture of Life" and "Culture of Death" were just two of his own notable contributions to how people understand what they see.

If our desire is to shift hearts and minds away from the language of the Culture of Death then we must articulate a story, a narrative, in language that upholds the value the dignity of the human person in a new and intelligible way. We must make this language our starting point in every way we approach life and family issues.

But we will have to be consistent. It's so easy to be drawn into the current language and narrative, one in which my pleasure is the highest good, even a "right," where others have the obligation to make sure my right to pleasure is secured. And where other claims to rights fall beneath mine.

How do we reason with one who, knowingly or not, accepts this corrupt notion of rights and happiness? We will rarely be able to truly reason with such a person, but when asked a question we must answer from the point of love and truth, from the position of true respect for human dignity and rights -- positions which value our identity as made in the image of our Creator. We must respond to the issues of the day and intelligibly answer the questions; however, we need to ultimately shift from a posture of constant defensiveness and take a more "offensive," or positive, stance.

As Pope Francis has put so beautifully, and in perfect harmony with his predecessors, Christianity is in no way primarily a list of prohibitions, it is a love story. To see life as a gift -- a wonderful gift from the One who loves us more than we could possibly love another -- is a story in need of constant telling and retelling. There are as many ways of telling this story as there are Christians, but we must get better at telling this story, first in how we live our lives, and second, in a compelling narrative.

The narrative of the Culture of Death is certainly dominant now, but it is utterly dark, empty and dissatisfying. When its adherents realize this, let them turn to see a Christian who is in love, who lives accordingly, and who is ready to share this love with them.
Sincerely yours in Christ,

Justice Riders go back to school...

To Lead the Charge at Home
Columbus, OH – August 30, 2013 – From Cleveland to Columbus to Cincinnati to Pittsburgh, last month our Justice Riders took the pictures of abortion victims to downtown squares, unveiled them above thousands of commuters driving to work, displayed them to a crowd funneling into an Indians baseball game, and more. Several confirmed babies were saved, minds were changed.  And that was just the beginning.
Weeks after returning home, Riders Ian & Christian led a team of students using our tools in downtown Fort Wayne, IN (see video above). Rider Sarah led a team for a week-long outreach tour on the east coast.  And now as school resumes, we look to university club presidents who were on the team as they lead their own groups on campus this fall:
There is no better teacher than experience. The people who leave these rides are prepared and seasoned in defending the pro-life position.—Zach, President, Virginia Tech Students for Life
This is the most pro-active thing I can do to save babies threatened by abortion. Created Equal is inspiring youth to join the movement that will make history.—Andrea, President, Created Equal of Moody Bible Institute
Created Equal is the cutting-edge leader in pro-life advocacy techniques.—Jonathan, President, Purdue University Students for Life
As these Justice Riders return to campus, I will begin deploying my full-time staff one-by-one to cover more ground, reach more universities, and identify more leaders like Zach, Andrea, and Jonathan. As our ranks grow, more children will be saved and lives changed. Please join us.
WILL YOU HELP ME DEPLOY MY TEAM TO SCHOOLS THIS FALL?  YOUR GIFT OF $50, $25, $10, OR EVEN $5 PROVIDES FUEL FOR ONE STAFFER TO TAKE OUR TRAINING/OUTREACH KIT ON THE ROAD THIS FALL SEMESTER.

Dear Friends for Life,
Redefining marriage is the latest item on the slippery slope found in the Culture of Death

The truth is marriage has been defined by our human nature and so cannot be redefined. The politicians' futile attempts to put their stamp on it means nothing. They cannot redefine gravity, time and the laws governing chemical reactions and they sure cannot change the fact that the two genders that exist in our nature make marriage possible. Not only possible for absolutely essential for our very existence. -

They both involved a frank commitment to targeting innocent targets, and they both depended on the calculated willingness to destroy them deliberately. ... (Life): "Video: Abortion-Premature Birth Link is Settled Science"Here is a superb video exposing the link between induced abortion and increased risk of premature birth in later pregnancies due to damage during the abortion procedure or infection. The Institute of Medicine and 134 studies link abortion with subsequent premature birth. It is settled science. Premature birth puts babies at risk for mental retardation, cerebral palsy, autism, epilepsy, blindness and deafness. Premature birth before 32 weeks gestation puts women at increased risk for breast cancer, for the same biological reasons that induced abortion raises risk. The hormonal changes that take place in the breasts are identical. The breasts are left with more places for cancers to start.

 ****************************************

ITEM #1: What Are the Rights of Donor-Conceived People?

What are the rights of donor-conceived people? To ask this question is to suggest that we have different rights from everyone else-and so we do, because we've allowed it.We've created a class of people who are manufactured, and treat them as less-than-fully human, demanding that they be grateful for whatever circumstances we give them.

****************************************

ITEM #2:
Designing for a 'better' baby?

Designer babies, once a topic for science fiction, are now closer to reality. But there are serious questions about ethics and moral principles.
****************************************

ITEM #3:   Low birthrate could slash South Korea's youth population in half by 2060: report

South Korea's low birthrate means the size of its youth population - those aged between 9 and 24 - will be slashed in half by 2060, a government report warned Monday.

****************************************

ITEM #4: Report Shows Huge IVF Failure: 3.8 Million Embryos Produce Just 122,000 Babies

If you agree with today's doctors that early human life can be treated as a disposable commodity then the figures that Lord Alton has uncovered (not much short of the current population of New Zealand!) will probably not bother you much at all. But if, like me, you believe that they are special creations made in God's image, which should be granted respect, wonder, empathy and protection you will no doubt be very concerned indeed.
****************************************

ITEM #5: Euthanasia: The right to die can so easily become the duty to die

Euthanasia (being killed by a doctor) and assisted suicide (being helped to kill oneself) are illegal for good reason.
****************************************
ITEM #6: Assisted Suicide: Pushing Death for Parents Instead of Care, Compassion
Comment: I've had to deal with such families that asked - or even insisted - that I give their loved one a lethal overdose. A few were concerned about their loved one but mistakenly confused debilitation/disability or reduced level of consciousness with suffering. When dealt with compassionately, these family members changed their minds and even thanked us afterward for the dignified, natural death of their loved ones. Some were belligerent like the brother of a terminally ill woman who insisted that we overdose his sister when she lost consciousness. Ironically, the sister had previously told me to call her close friend instead of her brother when she took a turn for the worse. She trusted her friend but not her brother. Some were bizarre. I found one family member crimping his mother's oxygen tube. He didn't know that this wouldn't kill his mom or speed her death. There wasn't much we could do except report the incident to the hospital authorities and watch the family members. This idea of family assisted suicide is so misguided. Some family members may think they are being compassionate but killing or trying to kill people must not be kept "very private". At the very least, family members who kill should explain themselves in a court of law, be ready to accept the consequences of their actions including denail of life insurance benefits. And all this should be covered by an unbiased media. -Nancy Valko, RN

****************************************

ITEM #7 Scholar: Liberals, Feminists Have Made Men Afraid to Embrace Their Manhood
"I want the men listening … to embrace your manhood," Morse said. "Do not be ashamed. … There’s nothing wrong with being a man. That’s what we need from you. We need those who will take responsibility for protecting the weak and will sustain the family. There’s nothing to be ashamed of."
****************************************

ITEM #8: Scary Brave New World: Here Come Woman Fathers and Male Mothers

Have you noticed that we develop new biotechnologies these days for health issues, but they mostly become used for lifestyle facilitation? That's what will happen if research in mice - that turned skin cells into both sperm and eggs and later used to create live mouse births, finds human application.
****************************************

ITEM #9: Bolivian bishops declare pro-abortion legislators should not receive Communion

The bishop's answer was: "Those four ministers can act conscientiously; they will never be expelled from any church, but they wouldn't have to come forward to receive communion, to receive Christ's body."

****************************************

ITEM #10: Teen Sex Sleepovers: The Latest Fad in Immoral Sex Education

Comment: I just read another article advocating the same thing. Apparently, sex sleepovers for teens are becoming an open fad. I remember when my youngest daughter told me about a friend who complained that her mother forced her to get birth control pills at 15. This girl was scared and reluctant but ultimately acquiesced. Then her mother set up the girl's first sexual experience in her home so that it would be "good." Personally, I would characterize this mother's actions as a form of child abuse. Now, many years after, this young girl has grown up having multiple affairs and a negative attitude about life in general. She is a sad casualty of this sexual experiment. So is her mom who divorced her dad and now lives with another man. -Nancy Valko, RN
****************************************
ITEM #11: Changing the CHANNEL
Methuselah himself might have struggled to win a place at one of Beijing's most popular old people's homes: the waiting list is currently 100 years long.
****************************************
ITEM #12: Palliative Leaders Want Electronic Health Records to Collect and Record Personal Data on Goals and Core Values
What data will be on your electronic health care records (EHRs) in the future? Your visits to the doctor? Diagnosis of your ailments? Your medications? Think again. Changes are coming to the "standard" content of EHRs, thanks to the "third path" euthanasia movement.

3. BECOME INVOLVED: Several years ago Fr. Jerry created a project entitled, "Journey for Life into the Heart of Asia". The project appeals for donations to help finance plane travel for lectures and seminars to developing countries in Asia. Strong focus is centered on reaching Asian Catholic Major Seminaries, Universities, Parishes, Hospitals and Family/Pro Life related groups. The lectures place emphasis on "The Asian Family at Crossroads: Life Issues, Trends and Challenges".

For information about no-cost Pro Life Talks to your group in Asia: contact Fr. Jerry at jerry@shirt.ocn.ne.jp.
